South African Adventures - Part 2 - Birding paradise.
During my recent trip to South Africa I spent a lot of time birdwatching. This blog contains photos of some of the species I saw. All the birds were seen close to Kruger, some in the bush during game drives and others in the lodge gardens.

Crested Barbet - a very colourful bird to start with.

Scarlet-Chested Sunbird - this is a female.

This is the Male Scarlet-Chested Sunbird, a very territorial bird.

I think this is a male White-Bellied Sunbird but not in breeding plumage, maybe a young bird.

Female White-Bellied Sunbird.

Grey Go-Away Bird. a member of the Turaco family.

Egyptian Goose, another territorial bird - tries to chase other species away from their pond.

Egyptian Goslings.

Grey heron - very similar to the Herons in Europe.

Wooly-Necked Stork.

Southern-Masked Weaver - one of many species of Weaver, makes their nests over water.

Common Waxbill - a finch sized bird.

Common Sandpiper.

Three-Banded Plover.

Black-Backed Puffback - a member of the Shrike family.

Dark-Capped Bulbul (black-eyed), a good singer.

Blacksmith's Lapwing (Plover)

Brimestone Canary.

Golden Pipit.

I think this is a Bennett's Woodpecker but it could be a Cardinal Woodpecker.

Barn Swallow in winter plumage, this bird could have hatched in the UK?

Great-Reed warbler - quite hard to spot.

Verreaux's Eagle Owl also known as Giant Eagle Owl- this is a young bird.

Bateleur - a stunning bird of prey with a red bill and legs.

White-Backed Vulture.

Wahlberg's Eagle.

Southern-Yellow-Billed Hornbill - the flying banana!

Lilac-Breasted Roller - maybe the most colourful bird in this blog?

Cape Glossy Starling and Wattled Starling. The glossy is the blue bird. These birds were feeding on insects flushed out by Elephant.

Red-Billed Oxpecker hitching a ride on a cow.

Magpie Shrike with his breakfast in his bill.

Dusky Indigobird.

Long-Tailed Paradise Wydah. This is a male bird, his tail is much bigger than his body.

Woodland Kingfisher - a Kingfisher that doesn't eat fish!

Natal Spurfowl.

Helmeted Guinea-Fowl with chicks.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my blog.

Now I have seen your Swallow in the Foreign Birds thread, if you would, you could trickle some of these in there a few at a time, that would be great. Super shots and a smahing collection too, named to boot. Super blog Richard. Thanks. Fave shot, 3-banded plover, love that one.

What an amazing blog. Beautiful pictures. How did you know the names of all those birds? I don't know if you have seen my blog on sparrows, but I would like your opinion. Thanks for these great shots, I love birdwatching. Elizabeth

Hi, My favourite one is the woodland kingfisher. While in Africa away back, I visited Kruger, did not have my camera, so your blog brought back some great memories. Cheered me up in freezing Scotland! Thanks.
