stop zoom blur and digital zoom
Submitted by sylarpkc on Tue, 07/02/2012 - 05:21
Hey guys, this is a 2 part question. How do I stop my pictures being blurry when taking photos using the zoom? How do I turn the digital zoom on?
Im using a fujifilm finepix S2950, I have been trying to take a picture of my local beach front and need to use the zoom for what I think will make a great photo but every time I take it the image comes out blurry. Is there some sort of settings I can use to prevent this? I have tried using a stable tripod and tried by hand but I always get the same outcome.
Also in repsect of the digital zoom I can only seem to use the 18x optical zoom.
Please help
Matt

Hi Matt. Posting one of the pics in your gallery will help folks to give the best advice. When you use full zoom, you reduce the amount of light that comes into the lens. This means that the camera will choose a slower shutter speed to compensate. At slower shutter speeds and higher zoom, any camera movement will be magnified and cause blur. The most effective way to illiminate this is to mount the camera on tripod and use the self timer to fire the shutter. If you don't have one, try placing the camera on a steady surface instead. Failing this, try resting your arms on somthing solid to steady yourself.
You can also set a higher iso, which will reduce the shutter speed.
Hope that helps.

Hi Matt,
in handheld photos especially with long zoom tum the IS Dual mode on (Image Stabilisation). On a tripod - turn it off.
Bluebottle is right, you should put one ot two sample photos in here to avoid guesswork
So we can only work with your written information.
'Local beach front' nice photo place but often a place with little good contrasts. The Autofocus has a hard time with such a surrounding. Do you know Focus Lock? If not please check page 33 of your handbook. If yes try to use Focus Lock on a spot with the same distance to you as your real motif and than keep the shutter half pressed and turn to your motif.
Have you tried the SP - beach mode?
How to turn on digital zoom? 1.) It is set on/off on page 4 of the set-up menue item one 'DIGITAL ZOOM' 2.) don't do it
Fuji is open enough to write it even into the manual. Digital zoom does not increase the amount of visible details! It is simply an enlargement of the centre of your photo causing the picture quality to get worse. Don't use it. If you really need a magnification of parts of your photo better use software at home it will give you far better control! BTW if Digital zoom is turned on in the set up and it is not shown to work it may be because some shooting modes (like SR recognition) don't allow it and simply overwrite the settings.

Hi guys thanks for your reply, I have uploaded one of the many blurry pictures I have taken using the timer and on the tripod, also took the pictures without the timer and only the tripod but still had the same effect. The image can now be found in my gallery titled "Port Talbot Beach"

You can still get camera shake when using a tripod simply by pressing the shutter button. Use the self timer to release the shutter to avoid this. Don't use digital zoom. It just crops an area of the image seen by the sensor. You have more control if you use a full resolution image and crop the area you want in a photo editor.
Don't forget to turn off image stabilisation when you use a tripod.
